Auckland, NZ, Sept. 13, 2007 – Mr Ellis may be right about Rome not being built in a day but for all our sakes lets hope he isn’t Nero.
The fact that TVNZ has recorded its first ever loss can surely not solely be blamed on the mistakes of past management.
If we look at the current programming and commissioning decisions coming from TVNZ it is clear nothing is being done to reverse this downward slide.
Decisions such as removing the head of News and Current Affairs from the Executive Committee (in charge of the vision and direction of TVNZ) show that the PR and marketing managers are now in charge of our network.
TVNZ6 which will be made up of 75% repeat programming will become a graveyard for charter shows while repeats of Friends will remain in prime time on TV2.
Clearly TVNZ is not ready and not able to make the transition to this new digital broadcasting environment and continues to let down New Zealand audiences that want to see our culture and our people on our screens.
If Mr Ellis really wants to reverse the decline in revenue and ratings he should look to the mistakes the network is about to make rather than the mistakes of those that came before and indeed after him.
