Dr. Murray Feingold: Music has role in adolescent development – Taunton Daily Gazette

Remember when you were in high school and had a crush on the boy or girl of your dreams? Frequently, you associated a specific song that was popular at the time with this teenage relationship.

Decades later, when you hear the same song, memories come flowing back as you fondly remember your first love.

This is an example of the impact music can have on an adolescent.

Studies have also shown the important role that music plays on the socialization of the maturing youngster.

Adolescents use music in many ways. It helps relieve loneliness, tension and boredom. It uplifts their mood when they feel depressed. It can have an effect on their behavior. And, it can distract them from a real or imagined problem they are facing.

One study showed that on a given day, 85 percent of youngsters listen to music. About a third of them listen to music while they are engaged in other tasks, including doing their homework.

The type of music the adolescent listens to is also important. For example, those who listen to heavy metal music have been found to have an increased vulnerability and tendency toward risky behavior.

The lyrics of songs have become an increasing concern. Some have become more explicit regarding sex, violence and drugs.

Adolescents also have many more choices as to how they can listen to music. Music videos have become a popular choice. They consist not only of music but they show the singer performing. These performances are sometimes sexually explicit.

In one study, it was found youngsters between the ages of 12 and 15 watched music videos on an average of four days a week.

Adolescents will always listen to music. But it is important that parents be aware of how much time their child spends listening to music, the content of the videos they are watching, and the lyrics of the songs.

The entertainment industry must also become more responsible and realize the negative impact that their product may have on children and adolescents.

Massachusetts-based Dr. Murray Feingold is the physician in chief of the National Birth Defects Center, medical editor of WBZ-TV and WBZ radio, and president of the Genesis Fund. The Genesis Fund is a nonprofit organization that funds the care of children born with birth defects, mental retardation and genetic diseases.

DragnForce have parted ways with vocalist ZP Theart “due to insurmountable differences of musical opinion.” I’m not sure what qualifies as “insurmountable differences of musical opinion” in DragonForceland; did Theart want the music to get even faster? Slower? More keyboards? Fewer guitar solos? A horn section?
