New Metallica Album: Death Magnetic
Well, it’s finally been released and has hit the number one album on the NZ charts this week.
What are your thoughts on the album?
Chris Schulz’s Death Magnetic review for stuff.co.nz was clearly not favourable and it raised nearly 300 comments for it!
Is it a return to form for one of metal’s pioneering bands or is it a try hard effort to recapture what they once had?

2.5 stars thats very harsh.Sure not there best work but they cant possibly do there best work again after the 80,s albums. There still Gods in my book.4 stars from me
The dudes a fool!! We can either have masters of metal who continue to push the boundaries or we can have the rock has been dinosaurs that continue to put albums out to “Heat the swimming pool” as one interveiw said. Death magnetic rocks and like all the best Metallica albums its got the obvious choices and the others are growers. Metallica are long epics! Sit back and enjoy!!! ROCK ON!!!
hey listen to that metallica cd its F***ken great
Your after a comment.
While I think the album is quite disjointed. Some songs don’t flow on to each other, but all and all I think the album is sensational. Its made to just play loud and live.
In saying this I don’t like the day that never comes. Nothing really fits. Just a punch of riffs that sound like a pre-concert warm up. But then comes a long songs like My Apocalypse, cynanide, and all nighmare long to mention a few, which are just as good as anything the have put out previously.
I just hope they come to NZ again, and maybe add fight fire with fire to the playlist.
Last note, who learnt to play piano “unforgiven 3″
Death Magnetic is out of this world amazing!! That guy that wrote the negative review must not have fully functional eardrums!!! Ppl need to realise aswell that 24 years is a long time, metallica are not gonna play the same stuff all the time!! they gonna evolve!! And they are doing a great job of it!!!!!!!!
It’s better than their last few efforts but still nothing on their 1st 4 albums.
What is up with making track 7 an awesome song on nearly every album from every artist I listen too!?!?
Just heard “The Day that never comes” the other day,It Sounds Awsome!!
Although I havent got the cd yet,It is a metalhead Must-Have!
Best Cd to come out ths year!
I would say after listening to it constantly on the way to work, and playing the downloaded album on guitar hero , its a pretty solid riff fest.
There are some definite call backs to “and justice for all”, and “load / reload”. You can notice the old school sounding guitar harmonies, and the thrashy breakdown riffs. There are some really catchy songs, my fav would be Judas kiss, All nightmare long, my apocalypse, broken beaten and scarred, and suicide and redemption.
I think it is a clear return to form from metallica, glad they let kirk open up more and it puts anything else they have released in the last 15 or so years to shame, id give it a solid 4.5/5
kudos to metallica for always trying to deliver something different. its that drive to be different from the others that led them to the forefront of thrash metal and along with other pioneers in the metal scene (e.g. slayer come to mind) actually create a sound that alot of us metallers have come to take for granted.having said that its been twenty years since i have heard a new metallica song that i like. for me there has been nothing since justice that i personally have enjoyed, every album for me has been like being served up a plate of cold peas.
until now… death magnetic is AWSOME.
